When the nobility has experienced a form of influence in politics, it is difficult to remove that influence and rule as a prince - the nobles will remain convinced of their own political legitimacy, entitlement. This is politically complicated because, to the Florentine nobles, autonomy has become normalized. The Medicis are inheriting a state that was formerly a republic. Because the people are not accustomed to the Medicis as rulers, they do not have the comfort and ease associated with tradition and lineage there is no political precedent for their rule, and establishing themselves as politically legitimate will be a challenge.
